This unit will engage 7th. grade Art students in the creative and analytical process of advertising design. They will learn to recognize 7 forms of emotional deception: romance, guilt, pity, power, worry, embarrassment, and fear. They will be introduced to propaganda techniques of band wagon, card-stacking, testimonial, plain folks, glittering generalities, and name calling. They will critique ads for their use of color, images, layout, font, and background, logo, slogan, and jingle. They will work individually or in a small group to create a magazine ad or a TV commercial.
Connections and learning extensions can easily be make to Language Arts (poetry, writing, and character development), Music (jingles for TV commercials), FACE (consumerism), and Social Studies (historical and current cultural mores).
Prior to this unit, students should be able to recognize the principles and elements of design. They will need a working knowledge of complementary colors and contrast of color and shape. Practice in cooperative learning and the techniques of brainstorming and problem solving will be most helpful.
