Conclusion

Through this unit students will be introduced to the value of visual literacy.  The skills that they gain will help them to interpret visual imagery in advertising.  They will be able to make critical judgements about the content in the ads and to recognize the persuasive techniques that have been used to create them.  As consumers, they may gain an understanding of the impact that their product choices have on their own lives, the lives of their family, the community, and even of the world.

As participants in the design of ads and commercials, the students will have experienced some ot the same constraints and pressures that these real life roles involve.  These activities may give the students a glimpse of the wide variety of visual art and design occupations that are available to adult artists.  Students will have the opportunity to utilize and evaluate the tools and strategies used by design artists.  They may begin to appreciate the power of well designed ads and video to inspire, entertain, fool, coerce, and shape our self-image.
